Series: People
The People series began in Amsterdam in 2023 as an exercise in letting go of control and perfectionism.
Each face is drawn in one go, without correcting the line. I don’t pause to fix or plan. I let my hand move and see who shows up. The figures arrive while I’m drawing, not from a reference or a photo in my head. A line commits, and a person emerges, someone unplanned, with their own posture and expression. Each character is named after the feeling they give me, and the name comes last, never before.
At first, I didn’t think I knew them, but slowly I realized they are citizens of a city that does not exist on any map, assembled from everywhere I have lived. Istanbul gave me one kind of face. Paris one, Amsterdam another. San Francisco is still giving. Migration keeps adding to the cast. What I am building, without having planned it, is an imaginary global city; multicultural, multinational, quietly growing. The characters are its population and, in some way, my company that I carry with me.
The series is a growing body of work, with five pieces released as limited edition prints of 40 each. Selected original works are also available to collect.
Each one stands alone. Together, they’re something else.
